Google's Universal Cart is live. What should a Shopify brand check this week?

TL;DR: Google launched Universal Cart in the US on October 15, 2026, across Search and the Gemini app. Shoppers can check out with an eligible brand without leaving Google, and the brand stays the merchant of record. On Shopify, direct checkout on Google AI Mode and Gemini is switched on by default for eligible US stores. Three things to check this week: whether you're in, how those orders will show up in your reports, and whether your product data gives Google a clear reason to pick you.

What is Google's Universal Cart?

Universal Cart is a shopping cart inside Google that works across merchants. Shoppers add products from Search and the Gemini app, then either check out right in the cart or move the items to the brand's own site to finish there. Google says that either way, "the brand stays the merchant of record" (Google, May 19, 2026). It launched in the US on October 15, 2026, in Search and the Gemini app (Google, Oct 15, 2026). YouTube and Gmail were announced in May ("with YouTube and Gmail to follow") and weren't part of the October 15 launch (Google, May 19, 2026).

Checkout runs on the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), an open standard Google co-developed with Shopify, Etsy, Wayfair, Target and Walmart (Google, Jan 11, 2026).

Is my Shopify store already in?

Possibly, without you choosing it. Shopify's help center says direct checkout on Google AI Mode and Gemini is "activated by default for eligible stores", and that it is still rolling out (Shopify Help). Eligibility includes a US store selling to US customers, a valid Google Merchant Center account, products synced to Merchant Center, and completed store policies.

In our own data, 22 of the 23 Shopify stores run through our scanner (up to Oct 14) already publish a UCP profile; about 1 of the 105 other domains we scanned does. A UCP profile shows Shopify's side is ready. It doesn't by itself mean Google has turned on checkout for that store.

To check or change it, follow Shopify's steps: in Shopify admin, go to Sales channels > Agentic, turn off Allow Shopify to manage for me, click Google AI Mode and Gemini, turn Direct checkout on or off, and click Save. Turning direct checkout off doesn't hide your products; shoppers are sent to your site to buy instead.

How will these orders show up?

Check this before the holiday season, not after. Shopify says "Orders from AI channels display in your Shopify admin with channel or referrer attribution so that you know where the order originated from" (Shopify Help).

One detail matters for reporting: on Shopify's direct checkout for Google, Google Analytics and custom pixels won't fire (Shopify Help). So if your weekly report starts from GA4, sales completed inside Google can be missing from it. Your Shopify orders are where they'll appear.

What does Google read to pick my products?

Your product data. Universal Cart can only offer what your catalog says clearly: titles, variants, prices, shipping and return policies, and the details a shopper asks about before buying. Google's own requirements start with a Merchant Center account in good standing with products approved for free listings, plus return policies and customer support contact details (Google Merchant Center).

The harder question is which of your products Google suggests when a shopper asks something specific. That comes down to whether your product pages answer the questions your buyers are likely to ask, in the words they use.

What should I do this week?

  1. Open Sales channels > Agentic > Google AI Mode and Gemini and confirm whether direct checkout is on, and whether you want it on.
  2. Check your product data in Merchant Center: titles, variants, prices, shipping and returns.
  3. Make sure your weekly report reads Shopify orders by channel, not only GA4, so purchases completed inside Google aren't missed.

FAQ

Is Universal Cart mandatory? No. On Shopify, go to Sales channels > Agentic, turn off Allow Shopify to manage for me, then turn direct checkout off under Google AI Mode and Gemini. Your products can still appear on Google; shoppers are sent to your site to buy.

Does the brand stay the merchant of record? Yes. Google says the brand remains the merchant of record whether the shopper checks out in the cart or on the brand's site.

Where is it live? In the US, in Google Search and the Gemini app, as of October 15, 2026. Google has announced YouTube and Gmail next, and UCP checkout in Canada and Australia.

Will GA4 see orders placed inside Google? Not on Shopify's direct checkout, where Google Analytics and custom pixels don't fire. Read those sales in your Shopify orders.
