What are ChatGPT's Sponsored Agents, and what do they mean for consumer brands?
OpenAI is testing ChatGPT ads that open a conversation with a brand's own agent. For consumer brands selling considered products, the specs get answered in the chat. What wins the sale is the last push.

TL;DR
- What it is: Sponsored Agents let a shopper who clicks a ChatGPT ad chat with a brand's own AI agent before visiting the brand's site. OpenAI launched the test on September 16, 2026, with select US advertisers.
- What changes: product specs like size, materials and returns get answered inside the conversation. That makes them the minimum, not the differentiator.
- What wins the sale: the last push, meaning the brand values, positioning and proof that make a shopper who has already compared options choose you. Citable reconstructs what each type of buyer still needs to hear at that moment, and helps you deliver it on your product pages and across your media channels, like ads and social media.
What are ChatGPT Sponsored Agents, and should my consumer brand use them?
Sponsored Agents are a ChatGPT ad format that opens a conversation with a brand's own AI agent. Most consumer brands can't buy them yet, but every consumer brand selling considered products should prepare for what they change.
After clicking an ad, a shopper can start "a clearly labeled conversation with a business-sponsored agent" (OpenAI, via Search Engine Roundtable) and ask it follow-up questions about the brand's products. OpenAI says that conversation is kept separate from ChatGPT's own answers and from the chat the shopper started in, and that the shopper can click through to the brand's website when they're ready to move forward (Unite.AI).
OpenAI's own example is a dining table. A shopper who clicks the ad might ask about its dimensions, how many people it seats, or how to care for the finish.
OpenAI is testing Sponsored Agents with select advertisers in the United States. What they change for everyone else is how much a shopper already knows when they reach your site.
What should my product page say to shoppers who already researched the product in ChatGPT?
It should give them the reason to choose you, because the specs are often already answered. Every brand in the comparison can answer those now. For a considered purchase like a dining table, an e-bike or a tent, the shopper has hard requirements: will it fit, will it hold six people, can it be returned. AI assistants, and now brands' own sponsored agents, answer those questions inside the conversation.
Accurate specs are still the foundation, since an agent can only answer with what it can find. What sets a consumer brand apart is what a spec table can't hold: the values the brand stands for, the position it takes in its category, and the evidence that makes a shopper trust it.
How do I convert shoppers who arrive on my store from ChatGPT?
Give them the last push: the reason to choose you, for a shopper who has already done their research. A product page built to answer every question is written for a shopper who hasn't asked anything yet. A shopper who arrives from ChatGPT has already asked. They have often checked the size, compared two or three brands and narrowed it down, so another table of measurements won't move them.
What moves them depends on who they are. A family furnishing a first home is looking for a different reason than a design-led buyer replacing a table they've had for twenty years.
What opportunities does this create for consumer brands?
- Be the brand an agent can answer for. Agents answer from what they can find. A brand whose dimensions, materials, care and returns are complete and consistent, on its site and in its product data, is the one an agent can describe with confidence.
- Own the reason to choose you, buyer type by buyer type. Once the specs are settled, each type of buyer still needs a different reason. A brand that knows those reasons can say them before a competitor does.
- Make the last push easy to find. A shopper arriving from ChatGPT is often close to a decision. Putting the reason to buy on the product page they land on, and across the media channels, like ads and social media, that reach the same buyer types, meets them at that moment.
- Let proof do the convincing. Reviews, warranties, materials sourcing and press turn a claim into a reason a shopper can believe.

FAQ
Who can buy Sponsored Agents today? Only select advertisers in the United States, in OpenAI's test.
How are Sponsored Agents different from regular ChatGPT ads? A regular ChatGPT ad sends the shopper to the brand's website. A Sponsored Agent first opens a labeled conversation with the brand's own agent, where the shopper can ask follow-up questions, and then links to the website.
Do I need Sponsored Agents to benefit from this shift? No. Many shoppers already research in ChatGPT before they reach your site. Sponsored Agents make that research happen inside your ad, but the last push still decides the sale either way.
