Know your buyers. Citable builds your buyer personas and reconstructs the questions each is likely to ask AI in your category.
Athletic & fitness: when shoppers ask AI what to buy, is your brand in the answer?
Citable shows how often AI names you next to your competitors.

What AI answers name and cite today
When asked on Oct 26, 2026, with no persona (method below):
- "best rowing machine for home": Concept2, Hydrow and WaterRower were each named in at least 12 of 12 answers, and Sunny Health & Fitness in 10. The most-cited source was garagegymreviews.com (4 answers).
- "best adjustable dumbbells": NÜOBELL and Bowflex were each named in at least 10 of 11 answers, and PowerBlock and Ironmaster in 7. The most-cited source was garagegymreviews.com (5 answers).
- "what home gym equipment should a beginner buy": no brand was named in more than 2 of 12 answers.
Sources counted are from Google AI Overview, Perplexity and Gemini answers; ChatGPT's logged-out answers cite none.
What this shows: for a specific product, a few brands appear in nearly every answer. For a broad beginner question, no brand owns the answer yet.
Method: ChatGPT and Google AI Overview: real logged-out answers. Perplexity and Gemini: API (sonar, Gemini Flash). 3 runs each, Oct 26, 2026. Answers can differ by account and location. Counts are a lower bound: "at least" means a name our parser may have missed isn't counted.
When someone asks ChatGPT, Google's AI answers or Perplexity what to buy for a home gym, the answer names a few brands and leaves out the rest. Citable shows you which questions your buyers are likely to ask in your category, which brands AI names in the answers today, and what to change on your pages.
The season
Q1 is the peak
Of the durable goods OpenBrand tracks in the US, exercise equipment has consistently seen the largest rise in demand from Q4 to Q1 (OpenBrand purchase data, 2012–2022).
- In the US, exercise equipment has the largest Q4-to-Q1 rise of the durable goods OpenBrand tracks. OpenBrand: "consumer demand for Exercise Equipment products has consistently seen the largest increase from Q4 to Q1" (US purchase data, 2012–2022; OpenBrand, Jan 5, 2023).
- In the UK, online purchases of exercise equipment rose 60% in January 2025 against December 2024 (Adobe Analytics, Adobe, Feb 2025; also reported by LBC, Feb 10, 2025).
What that means for timing: pages need time to be found before buyers start asking, so we recommend publishing by mid-November.
How a campaign works for a fitness brand
Find where AI names others. Every week, Citable tests those questions across AI assistants and shows which brands are named and which pages are cited instead of yours.
Fix the pages. Citable drafts the content and product-page changes for your team to approve. By default, nothing is published.
Measure in orders. Citable shows AI visits and orders in Google Analytics terms, so you see the channel in orders, not just in mentions.
Questions fitness brands are likely to ask about AI
How do fitness equipment brands get recommended by ChatGPT?
Make the facts shoppers ask about (what the product does, how big it is, what it costs, how it compares) complete and current on your own pages and wherever AI reads about you. For product results, OpenAI says merchants "are ranked based on factors like availability, price, quality, and whether they are the maker or primary seller of that item" (OpenAI Help Center, updated Oct 3, 2026). So the work is on two fronts: product data that is complete and current, and pages that answer the questions buyers bring to AI.
How can a home gym brand show up when people ask AI what to buy for New Year?
Find out which versions of that question your buyers are likely to ask (by space, by budget, by type of training, by noise) and what AI answers say today. Then publish pages that answer them directly, with the facts an assistant can quote: dimensions and footprint, weight limits, resistance or speed range, assembly, warranty, delivery and returns, and price. Answers change from one run to the next, so judge progress by the trend across many runs, not one screenshot.
How do fitness equipment brands prepare for January sales?
Pages need time to be crawled and picked up before they show up in answers, so we recommend publishing by mid-November. See the season section below for what the January data shows.
What's the best marketing tool for a fitness equipment brand on Shopify?
Pick on three things: whether it tracks the questions your buyers are likely to ask (not just your brand name), whether it covers the assistants your buyers use, and whether it tells you what to change. Citable does all three: it finds where AI names other brands, proposes the content and product-page changes for your team to approve, and shows AI visits and orders in Google Analytics terms (see below).
Why does ChatGPT recommend Peloton or Rogue instead of smaller brands?
AI answers lean on the sources they cite: review roundups, retailer pages and articles that answer the question. When the same few pages are cited again and again, the brands on them tend to come back. A smaller brand gets in by being on the pages AI already reads, and by publishing its own page that answers a specific question (a small space, a budget, a training style) better than a general roundup does.
How do I see which fitness brands AI assistants recommend for my category?
Ask the assistants the questions your buyers would ask, many times, on more than one assistant, and record who is named and which sources are cited. Doing it by hand gives you a snapshot. Citable runs your tracked questions every week (ChatGPT on Audit; ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini on Optimize; any 3 of 6 assistants on Grow) and shows which brands are named instead of yours.
How should a fitness equipment brand write product pages for AI shoppers?
Put the answer in text, not only in images and video: dimensions, folded size, weight, user weight limit, power needs, noise, warranty, delivery and assembly, and price. Use the words buyers use in their questions. Add a short FAQ answering the comparisons people make. If you sell on Shopify, OpenAI says product data from Shopify Catalog is "already integrated into ChatGPT" (OpenAI Help Center), so the data in your store has to be right.
How can a rowing machine or treadmill brand compete with Amazon in AI answers?
Amazon is a large channel for this category: in Q4 2020 it had 31% of US fitness equipment unit sales (OpenBrand, Feb 2021). In product results, OpenAI lists "whether they are the maker or primary seller of that item" among its ranking factors, so a brand selling its own product on its own site can make that clear. Answer the questions a marketplace listing doesn't: which model fits a small room, how loud it is, what the warranty covers, how delivery and assembly work.
What do people ask AI before buying home gym equipment?
People compare options before a considered purchase like this one. Citable reconstructs the questions your buyers are likely to ask for your category and personas, then tests them across AI assistants every week.
How do high-ticket fitness brands grow their own website sales?
In the US, 66% of fitness equipment purchases were made online as of September 2023 (OpenBrand, Sept 2024). For a brand's own site, that means being named in the answers buyers read before they choose where to buy, and measuring what arrives. ChatGPT adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to the links it sends to websites, so those visits show up in your analytics. With Google Analytics connected, Citable shows visits and orders from AI assistants, as Google Analytics attributes them.
