Wellness & supplements: when shoppers ask AI what to take, is your brand in the answer?

Citable shows how often AI names you next to your competitors.

What AI answers name and cite today

When asked on Oct 26, 2026, with no persona (method below):

  • "best multivitamin for women": Nature Made was named in at least 12 of 12 answers, Ritual in 10, Thorne in 9, Garden of Life in 6. The most-cited sources were healthline.com (6 answers) and everydayhealth.com (5).
  • "best creatine supplement": Nutricost was named in at least 9 of 12 answers and Thorne in 8. The most-cited source was nsfsport.com (3 answers).
  • "best magnesium supplement": ChatGPT's logged-out answers named no brand in any of its 3 answers. Google AI Overview named Thorne, Doctor's Best, Life Extension and NOW Foods in all 3 of its answers, and so did Gemini. The most-cited source was ods.od.nih.gov (3 answers).

Sources counted are from Google AI Overview, Perplexity and Gemini answers; ChatGPT's logged-out answers cite none.

What this shows: the same few brands come back again and again, and which ones depends on which assistant is asked.

Method: ChatGPT and Google AI Overview: real logged-out answers. Perplexity and Gemini: API (sonar, Gemini Flash). 3 runs each, Oct 26, 2026. Answers can differ by account and location. Counts are a lower bound: "at least" means a name our parser may have missed isn't counted.

When someone asks ChatGPT, Google's AI answers or Perplexity which supplement to take, the answer names a few brands and leaves out the rest. Citable shows you which questions your buyers are likely to ask in your category, which brands AI names in the answers today, and what to change on your pages.

The season

January is the peak

For two supplement categories, January is the biggest sales month of the year (SPINS, 2024).

  • January is the biggest month for some supplement categories. SPINS: "Superfood & Whole Food Supplements tend to have their biggest month of the year in January," and "Mood Supplements tend to have their highest sales of the year in January" (SPINS, Jan 31, 2024).
  • In the UK, online supplement spending rose 26% in January 2025. "online spending on natural supplements including multivitamin powders increased by 26%" in January 2025 against December 2024, and exercise equipment rose 60% (Adobe Analytics, Adobe, Feb 2025; also reported by LBC, Feb 10, 2025).

What that means for timing: pages need time to be found before buyers start asking, so we recommend publishing by mid-November.

How a campaign works for a wellness brand

01

Know your buyers. Citable builds your buyer personas and reconstructs the questions each is likely to ask AI in your category.

02

Find where AI names others. Every week, Citable tests those questions across AI assistants and shows which brands are named and which pages are cited instead of yours.

03

Fix the pages. Citable drafts the content and product-page changes for your team to approve. By default, nothing is published.

04

Measure in orders. Citable shows AI visits and orders in Google Analytics terms (see above), so you see the channel in orders, not just in mentions.

Questions wellness brands are likely to ask about AI

How do wellness brands get recommended by ChatGPT?

Make the facts shoppers ask about (what the product is, who it is for, what is in it, how it compares) complete and current on your own pages and wherever AI reads about you. For product results, OpenAI says merchants "are ranked based on factors like availability, price, quality, and whether they are the maker or primary seller of that item" (OpenAI Help Center, updated Oct 3, 2026). So the work is on two fronts: product data that is complete and current, and pages that answer the questions buyers bring to AI.

How can a supplement brand show up when people ask AI which supplement to take?

Start by finding out which version of that question your buyers are likely to ask (by form, by ingredient, by routine, by budget) and what AI answers say today. Then publish pages that answer those questions directly, with the facts an assistant can quote: ingredients and amounts, form, serving, certifications, price, and how your product differs from the alternatives. Answers change from one run to the next, so judge progress by the trend across many runs, not one screenshot.

What do people ask AI before buying a supplement?

People compare options before a considered purchase like this one. Citable reconstructs the questions your buyers are likely to ask for your category and personas, then tests them across AI assistants every week.

How do I find out what AI assistants say about my supplement brand?

Ask the assistants the questions your buyers would ask, many times, on more than one assistant, and record who is named and which sources are cited. Doing it by hand gives you a snapshot. Citable runs your tracked questions every week (ChatGPT on Audit; ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini on Optimize; any 3 of 6 assistants on Grow) and shows which brands are named instead of yours.

Why does ChatGPT recommend the same few supplement brands every time?

AI answers lean on the sources they cite: review roundups, retailer pages and articles that answer the question. When the same few pages are cited again and again, the same few brands tend to come back. The way in is to be on the pages AI already reads, and to publish your own page that answers the question better than the roundup does.

How can a supplement brand market without making health claims and still get found by AI?

Health claims are regulated. In the US, the FTC expects "adequate substantiation for all objective product claims" before an ad runs (FTC Health Products Compliance Guidance). You don't need claims to be found. AI answers draw on facts: ingredients, amounts, form, testing and certifications, price per serving, how to take it, and how it compares with other forms. Pages built on those facts are both safer and easier for an assistant to quote.

How should a wellness brand write product pages that AI can read?

Put the answer in text, not only in images: the full ingredient list with amounts, serving size, form, certifications, price, shipping and returns. Use the words buyers use in their questions. Add a short FAQ answering the comparisons people make. If you sell on Shopify, OpenAI says product data from Shopify Catalog is "already integrated into ChatGPT" (OpenAI Help Center), so the data in your store has to be right.

How do supplement brands prepare for New Year sales?

Start before the research starts. Pages need time to be crawled and picked up before they show up in answers, so we recommend publishing 6–8 weeks before January: in practice, by mid-November. See the season section below for what the January data shows.

How do I track online orders that came from ChatGPT?

ChatGPT adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to the links it sends to websites, so those visits show up in your analytics. Orders completed inside an AI assistant's own checkout may not pass through your site at all. With Google Analytics connected, Citable shows visits and orders from AI assistants, as Google Analytics attributes them. So you can measure the channel in orders, not just visits.

What's the best marketing tool for a wellness brand to show up in AI answers?

Pick on three things: whether it tracks the questions your buyers are likely to ask (not just your brand name), whether it covers the assistants your buyers use, and whether it tells you what to change. Citable does all three: it finds where AI names other brands, proposes the content and product-page changes for your team to approve, and shows AI visits and orders in Google Analytics terms (see above).
